Polymer Piping for Optimal Gas Grid Performance

Safe Operation for Gas Networks

At the core of our operations, we prioritize safety, longevity, and efficiency, enabling the gas distribution network to remain top-notch. PE pipes stand out for their robust safety profile—they're highly resistant to impact, abrasion, and leaks, guaranteeing a secure and accident-free environment. Their exceptional quality extends their lifespan significantly, resisting corrosion, chemicals, and environmental stress, thereby reducing maintenance costs and system failures, essential for the safety and reliability of gas networks.

Maintaining the reliability of a gas utility's piping system is crucial. We utilize Ultrasonic NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) for inspection purposes during the setup phase, while Pipe Condition Assessment techniques are available for operational phases to gather precise information on the condition of the piping infrastructure.

FAQs

What standards and certifications do GF Piping Systems PE gas distribution lines comply with?

GF Piping Systems PE gas distribution lines comply with international standards such as ISO, EN, and ASTM. They are also certified by relevant gas industry bodies to ensure safety and reliability.
Here is a list of the most crucial international standards including:

  • ISO 4437 for polyethylene pipes for gas supply
  • EN 1555 for plastic piping systems for gas supply
  • ASTM D2513 for polyethylene (PE) gas pressure pipe, tubing, and fittings These standards ensure the pipes meet safety, quality, and performance requirements.

What is active reinforcement for PE big dimensions, and which dimensions are covered?

ELGEF Plus electrofusion couplers d355 to d800 mm are manufactured with “active” PE reinforcement. During the welding process, the circumferential stress applied to the outer PE ring at the factory stops the socket from expanding. This means that the assembly gap between the socket and the pipe is actively and quickly closed.

GF Piping Systems' PE solutions for large dimensions include pipes up to d2000 (2000 mm diameter). These systems are designed to offer reliable, corrosion-free, and maintenance-free solutions with an expected lifetime of 100 years.

What installation techniques are recommended for GF Piping Systems PE gas distribution lines?

Recommended installation techniques include butt fusion, electrofusion, and socket fusion. These methods create strong, leak-proof joints that ensure the integrity of the gas distribution system. GF Piping Systems offers training programs and certification for installers so they are properly trained and certified in fusion welding techniques to ensure safe and reliable installations.

How do PE pipes perform in extreme temperatures?

PE pipes have excellent performance in a wide range of temperatures. They remain flexible at low temperatures and do not become brittle, and they can handle moderate high temperatures without degradation. GF Piping Systems' PE gas distribution lines can operate effectively in a wide temperature range. Typically, PE pipes can handle temperatures from -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F). Their flexibility and resistance to brittleness at low temperatures make them suitable for various climatic conditions.

What pressure ratings do GF Piping Systems' PE gas distribution lines support?

The pressure ratings for GF Piping Systems' PE gas distribution lines vary based on the specific product and diameter. Generally, PE pipes are available with pressure ratings up to 10 bar (145 psi) for gas distribution applications. It's essential to select the appropriate pressure rating based on the system requirements and design specifications.

What are common challenges for electrofusion and what services does GF Piping Systems offer to cope with this challenges?

Facing the challenges inherent to electrofusion requires a comprehensive understanding and adopting measures to mitigate common obstacles. This initiative ensures the integrity and reliability of gas polymer piping systems.

Common Challenges for Electrofusion

  • Pipe Ovality: Imperfectly rounded pipes can undermine the electrofusion process, weakening the resulting joints.
Prevention: Utilizing re-rounding clamps offered by GF Piping Systems can correct these ovalities, ensuring a snug fit and durable joints.
  • Contamination: The presence of dirt, dust, and other contaminants on the pipe ends can inhibit proper fusion.
Prevention: A combination of specialized cleaning tools and adherence to rigorous cleaning guidelines provided by GF Piping Systems ensures the elimination of contaminants, bolstering fusion success.
  • Incorrect Insertion Depth: Improper insertion of the pipe ends into the electrofusion fitting can lead to weak joints.
Prevention: GF Piping Systems provides detailed instructions and training on the correct insertion depths for their fittings. They also offer tools to mark the correct insertion depth on the pipes.
  • Environmental Conditions: Temperature fluctuations, wind, and moisture can affect the electrofusion process.
Prevention: GF Piping Systems recommends using welding tents or shelters to protect the fusion area from environmental factors. Their training programs cover best practices for working in various environmental conditions.
  • Oxidized Layer: The outer layer of the pipe can oxidize, which needs to be removed for a good weld.
Prevention: Use high-quality peeling tools that can evenly remove the oxidized layer around the entire circumference of the pipe. to enable a consistent peeling. The peeling depth should be consistent to ensure a smooth surface. Check out our extensive and easy-to-use chamfering portfolio.

The GF Global Academy's training programs encompass all facets of the electrofusion process, ensuring technicians are well-equipped to navigate potential challenges.
