Sources and Assumptions

The calculation tool uses data in the "ecoinvent" database data from trusted environmental sources, including the ESU Database (ESU, 2020). The following assumptions and data are used to ensure reliable and indicative results:

  • Data Sources: The carbon footprint values are derived from the ESU database, which contains over 5,100 datasets. This includes updated LCI data for crude oil, natural gas, and mineral oil products. More details can be found in the original database documentation (Jungbluth et al., 2018; Jungbluth & Meili, 2020). A valid "ecoinvent" license for v2.2 is required to access these datasets. For a more comprehensive understanding of the data used, please speak to an expert.
  • Energy Metrics: Energy required per kilogram for various pipe dimensions has been provided for three specific dimensions by GF Piping Systems factories. For other dimensions, data has been extrapolated from these values.
  • Carbon Equivalents: Country-specific CO2 emissions per kWh are based on 2023 data (Ourworldindata, 2023). Tree absorption equivalents are calculated assuming an average tree absorbs 10 kg (22 lbs) of CO2 per year for the first 20 years, with a lifespan of 100 years (Onetreeplanted, 2023). Transport emissions are based on standard CO2 emissions per km for vehicles and airplanes (European Environment Agency, 2022; Carbonindependent, 2020)
  • Please note: The information and technical data (altogether “Data”) herein are not binding, unless explicitly confirmed in writing. The Data neither constitutes any expressed, implied or warranted characteristics, nor guaranteed properties or a guaranteed durability. All Data is subject to modification. The results of the online carbon calculator are highly indicative as they depend on both open-source and in-house data.
